Clinical Decision Support System

Clinical Decision Support systems have become an integral part of medicine, and allow employers across the medical field to make fast, knowledgeable and safe decisions on how to treat patients. When prior to the implementation of systems like clinical DSS doctors relied on only prior experiences shared between colleagues and input received from around them, a doctor can now use a separate software with knowledge of patient records, allergies, and even proven ways to treat certain diseases. “Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) form a significant part of the field of clinical knowledge management technologies through their capacity to support the clinical process and use of knowledge, from diagnosis and investigation through treatment and long-term care.”[1]
As patients everyone wants to feel as confortable and confident in the decisions that our doctors make for when it comes to our well being. Being mistreated is a fear that everyone must feel. With systems such as CDSS our doctors are being given the best us the best chance they could have. By putting together knowledge a doctor has seen and learned over his career and combining it with the organizational and analytical properties that the DSS provides gives the chance of having the best treatment possible. “The purpose and goal of this technology is that, by combing the knowledge of the healthcare provider with the knowledge of historical trend data, the resulting decision will be a generated from a more thorough analysis of the patient’s data than the clinician or the decision support system could make individually.” [2]Able to scan and process data on case sensitive elements CDSS can provide that extra angle or option that the doctor may not have seen.
The quest for more ways to analyze data and more ways to get more information are still being explored in the CDSS field as well. There is always something that may have been missed that could be the piece to solve the mystery of the illness. An example is something called Natural Language processing, which hopefully someday will be incorporated into CDSS. “The promise is for NLP algorithms to analyze ordinary sentences and extract critical medical terms to derive possible causes of a patient's symptoms and recommend treatment options”[3]. This technology could break down language borders between doctors and patients in different ethnic areas of the country and world. Doctors could travel to third world countries with the CDSS software and speak to the sick people in different villages, and be able to clearly understand where they had been in the prior days or months, and what things they could have came into contact. This could prevent and help understand the spread of rampant disease in these parts of the world.
The proper definition of a CDSS is “an interactive decision support system (DSS) Computer Software, which is designed to assist physicians and other health professionals with decision making tasks, such as determining diagnosis of patient data.”[4] Since the start of medicine doctors have been searching for different ways to assist them along in their studies of the human body. From back in renaissance Europe when men would grave rob bodies in order to dissect them to understand the inner workings of the body, to the inception of medical schools where knowledge could be spread and taught on a universal scale, these new systems are one of the biggest innovations medicine has seen. Able to store more data and information, and be able to present it at the touch of a button, better than any human mind, these systems will help to saves thousands eventually millions of lives. Decisions will be made more swiftly and confidently when time is of the essence because of CDSS. The conclusion of all this is that clinical decision support systems have become an invaluable tool for the medical world, and will continue to change them in the future as well.

Disadvantages of Electronic Business

Electronic business has become a growing platform new entrepreneurs use to start a new business, but just like every other aspect of life there are always disadvantages. Most of our class is going to use this forum as an opportunity to show the positive sides to electronic business and the different aspects of it. I thought that it would be useful to also understand what the difficulties and problems with starting a business on a strictly electronic basis. Knowing both sides of about a topic, allows your knowledge of that topic to grow.
One thing that might cause owners to be hesitant when looking into starting an electronic business is that there is security issues it could cause. Security issues are raised in multiple areas of the business. First issues electronics could cause can seriously jeopardize the business data integrity. Viruses could shut down a business network or cause data to be disorganized and out of date. Also the Internet is a open source of valuable information, that can be accessed pretty easily by an outside source with the knowledge of how to hack into systems. Viruses cause unnecessary delays, file backups, storage problems, and other similar difficulties. The danger of hackers accessing files and corrupting accounts adds more stress to an already complex operation.”[1] Hackers can also wreck havoc with customers of the business that is only operable electronically. Most e-business relies on collection of payment through credit card information. Once a customer purchases a product and inputs their different information, the company’s database will most likely store their information for later use. “There are tools or options available to hackers whereby they can not only monitor but also control any data communicated over the internet.”[2] With the information in an accessible place, hackers can get in and steal the indentity of the company’s customers. Problems in this area are could mean the difference between the success and failure of the company. If a reputation of a company becomes known that their data and customer information are unsecured and liable to being hacked, the business has a slim chance of ever seeing any success unless they are able to fix the problem and prove it to the consumer.
Another disadvantage is the total disconnect that the consumer has from any kind of customer service, making it extremely difficult to establish oneself as a reliable business. The faceless nature of an e-business causes an issue of trust, which remains hard to resolve.”[3] Without being in physical proximity to the merchandise, electronic businesses face an unique problem that normal businesses would not. Being able to hold the product of purchase prior to making the decision to buy is a key element that e-businesses must overcome. A customer must trust that the products they see and are purchasing online will be the same product that they receive at their door and they must trust the quality of the advertised product. Also there is no customer support like one would receive in a retail store. For example, if it were a sporting goods electron business, and a customer was interested in purchasing a new set of golf clubs. Normally one would want to swing the clubs and maybe hit a few balls, which in the store would be no problem. This cannot happen online. Also they would be able to hear the differences, similarities, positives, and negatives of different brands and clubs alike from a sales rep who has knowledge of the products. Online on must rely strictly on the descriptions of the products to make their details.
E-businesses also must contend with the challenge of first bringing customers to their website, and following a purchase must find a way to make their website likeable enough to generate return customers, and build a client base. For companies that just start both online and not, their only way to get their name out there is advertising, but what makes e-commerce unique is there is no storefront that will do advertising for itself. Their building is their website, and they must make it appealing not only to bring in customers but keep them as well. Timing is also an issue. Consumers are used to seeing an item, purchasing it, and taking it home right away. This is obviously impossible for online business. This disconnect is one of the main troubles that e-businesses will face in order for their company to grow. First the order must be processed, then properly shipped which all takes time, taking away from customer satisfaction. If you sell physical goods, shipping it halfway round the world might take several days, weeks or even more.”[4] A lot of smaller businesses only option is to outsource their shipping, only handcuffing the company even more. It is a major disadvantage to have the growth and success of a electronic business company to be in the hands of a third party shipping department, whose interest in the business is the same as the owners.  It is imperative that for these companies their shipping departments at top of the line and do not make mistakes, because it will only make them lose customers. Only those e-businesses that can ensure delivery of the product to the customer in a timely and safe manner can survive.”[5]
Electronic business markets are only going to grow larger and larger as technology advances, and more and more young people will choose this as an option rather than open a non e-commerce style business. It is the future on how businesses will be operated. Being fairly new to the world means that their will obviously be issues. I thought it would be a good idea to make some of these disadvantages known, to show that with all the good there is still some bad. But there is a bright future ahead. By being able to pinpoint the sources of issues now, allows us to see what is flawed and make a conscious effort to fix what need fixing, to make electronic business into the best, most secure, consumer friendly, and timely way of business. But to conclude, this post touches on a few of the disadvantages someone may face when starting an online business.

Web 2.0 - Video Sharing

Video sharing websites such as YouTube and Tumblr have become a world wide source of entertainment and even income for anybody from amateur videographers to professional corporations and businesses looking to capitalize of the craze that these Web 2.0 websites have provided.  These video websites are a great example of the connectivity that Web 2.0 websites has provided to our present day world.  These websites bring people together in way that never before has been thought possible. These websites do not have limits on who can post videos, anybody at any given point of the day can pull out their camera, make a video, upload it within seconds where it could be viewed by someone on the opposite side of the globe.
It is not just amateurs embarking on the path of video-sharing sights either. Professionals from musicians to fortune 500 companies are making and uploading videos as a new way to market their products. These platforms have even became ways for politicians to run their campaigns and reach out to many more people than they would have been able to at just normal rallies in different cities. “Many artists and musicians have used viral video to promote and spread their work. Politicians are extensively using the free mediums to spread their messages and promote their agendas and platforms. Additionally, viral videos and short films have become some of the most popular forms of entertainment over the past few years.”[1] Business owners are taking the opportunities that these websites presents as well. These websites have opened up an entirely different field of advertising and marketing for companies. Unlike at any other point in history, company’s ideas can be distributed on a entirely global scale. When before they were limited to local or even national markets, video-sharing websites allow companies messages to be exponentially more spread out. For example, an up and coming sports drink company can produce a video, which can be seen all over the world. This maximizes the potential for the company to succeed because more people than ever can learn about their products, and instead of only possibly taking off in local markets, there is a chance it could explode into a global brand.
With the explosion of more and more of video websites it is not only large companies that are using them for their benefits. The phenomenon of the “viral video” and the prospect of making it rich through online videos were born. New dreams of becoming the next video with a million hits had instantly become one of the most popular attempts fame and fortune. But now, viral videos have become more excessive because we have more sites to host them and more means to reproduce and share them.”[2] With so many videos posted on so many websites chances have become pretty slim of your video becoming the next “Numa Numa” or “Star Wars Kid”. Television has even caught the viral video bug. It seems like every time the TV is on there is another show dedicated to crazy videos pulled off line. Still this has not slowed to many people down. It has become a common thought that if one posts a video that gets a million views they will be instantly successful. But with the explosion of so many videos this is not the case. For example a boy from Washington state, “whose YouTube video went viral starting Christmas week, by now viewed more than 1.7 million times”, but “all those YouTube views have so far netted around $400 for ads that run before the video begins.”[3] So even with the million views the money earned is not even from the video itself. Maybe due to the amount of video-sharing websites the allure of these instant sensations seems to fizz out much more quickly when the next day there is just another video who will get just as many views. Its makes sense that something of this nature were to happen. There is just not enough money to go around when there are hundreds even thousands of viral videos, when a few years back viral videos were few and far between and allowed them to stand out in society much more than in todays world.
To conclude the world of video sharing will only continue to grow in the coming years. By providing a way for people to share videos, YouTube has introduced viral videos and made them a part of our global culture.[4] The dreams of hitting it rich off the Internet will always be there for people from all walks of life. It could be the 12 year old boy next door, or multi-millionaire at the end of the block, but in any case someone will be trying to capitalize on this new found form of entertainment, advertising, and marketing. My conclusion is that Web 2.0 websites, specifically in the form of video sharing has left an indefinite mark on global society that will continue to stick around for years and years to come.
